What Is Singing? People often think you open your mouth and it just happens.... Not exactly. Many singers learn through imitation - and that's a good way to begin the journey, but at some point we have to explore and discover our own individual expression. That's why one of my greatest goals is to teach each student to find their true voice, their sound, their uniqueness.
Once a singer has a good understanding of their voice, they can then apply stylistic effects to their singing. Some singers come with that understanding already. They "know" their voices. Others need a little help understanding the scope of their singing voice. Through vocal exercises and songs/tunes, I work with students of all levels and help them sing with more freedom. They learn how the vocal mechanism works; how to sing with intention and positive energy; and how to develop a clearer understanding of how mind and body work together. Singing is the most daring of all the instruments because it involves our very being. It tells everyone who we are. To me, that's exciting! * NOTE: I work with beginning and intermediate level classical singers. When/if a student reaches an advanced level or wishes to pursue a professional career in classical singing, I will make referrals to studios with a more concentrated focus. |
